The King and his Friend (Shared By: Junaid Tahir)

A king in Africa had a close friend he grew up with. The friend had a habit of looking at every situation that ever occurred in his life (positive or negative) and remarking, "This is good!"

One day the king and his friend were out on a hunting expedition. The friend would load and prepare the guns for the king. The friend had apparently done something wrong in preparing one of the guns, for after taking the gun from his friend, the king fired it and his thumb was blown off.

Examining the situation the friend remarked as usual, "This is good!" To which the king replied, "No, this is NOT good!" and had his friend sent to jail.

About a year later, the king was hunting in an area that he should have known to stay clear of. Cannibals captured him and took them to their village. They tied his hands, stacked some wood, set up a stake and bound him to the stake. As they came near to set fire to the wood, they noticed that the king was missing a thumb.

Being superstitious, they never ate anyone that was less than whole. So untying the king, they sent him on his way. As he returned home, he was reminded of the event that had taken his thumb and felt remorse for his treatment of his friend.

He went immediately to the jail to speak with his friend. "You were right" he said, "it was good that my thumb was blown off." And he proceeded to tell his friend all that had just happened. "And so I am very sorry for sending you to jail for so long. It was bad for me to do this."

"No," his friend replied, "this is good!"

"What do you mean, 'This is good?!'" How could it be good that I sent my friend to jail for a year."

"If I had not been in jail, I would have been with you. :)"

Advice from a 101 years old Doctor

Advice From a 101 years Old Doctor!
Dr. Shigeaki Hinohara, Japan, turned 101 on 4th October 2012

As a 97 year old Doctor, he was interviewed, and gave his advice for a long and healthy life.

Shigeaki Hinohara is one of the world's longest-serving physicians and educators. Hinohara's magic touch is legendary: Since 1941 he has been healing patients at St. Luke's International Hospital in Tokyo and teaching at St. Luke's College of Nursing.

He has published around 15 books since his 75th birthday, including one "Living Long, Living Good" that has sold more than 1.2 million copies. As the founder of the New Elderly Movement, Hinohara encourages others to live a long and happy life, a quest in which no role model is better than the doctor himself.

Doctor Shigeaki Hinohara's main points for a long and happy life:

* Energy comes from feeling good, not from eating well or sleeping a lotWe all remember how as children, when we were having fun, we often forgot to eat or sleep. I believe that we can keep that attitude as adults, too. It's best not to tire the body with too many rules such as lunchtime and bedtime.

All people who live long regardless of nationality, race or gender share one thing in common: None are overweight. For breakfast I drink coffee, a glass of milk and some orange juice with a tablespoon of olive oil in it. Olive oil is great for the arteries and keeps my skin healthy. Lunch is milk and a few cookies, or nothing when I am too busy to eat. I never get hungry because I focus on my work. Dinner is veggies, a bit of fish and rice, and, twice a week, 100 grams of lean meat.

Always plan ahead. My schedule book is already full until 2014, with lectures and my usual hospital work. In 2016 I'll have some fun, though: I plan to attend the Tokyo Olympics!

There is no need to ever retire, but if one must, it should be a lot later than 65. The current retirement age was set at 65 half a century ago, when the average life-expectancy in Japan was 68 years and only 125 Japanese were over 100 years old. Today, Japanese women live to be around 86 and men 80, and we have 36,000 centenarians in our country. In 20 years we will have about 50,000 people over the age of 100...

Share what you know. I give 150 lectures a year, some for 100 elementary-school children, others for 4,500 business people. I usually speak for 60 to 90 minutes, standing, to stay strong.

When a doctor recommends you take a test or have some surgery, ask whether the doctor would suggest that his or her spouse or children go through such a procedure. Contrary to popular belief, doctors can't cure everyone. So why cause unnecessary pain with surgery I think music and animal therapy can help more than most doctors imagine.

To stay healthy, always take the stairs and carry your own stuff. I take two stairs at a time, to get my muscles moving.

My inspiration is Robert Browning's poem "Abt Vogler." My father used to read it to me. It encourages us to make big art, not small scribbles. It says to try to draw a circle so huge that there is no way we can finish it while we are alive. All we see is an arch; the rest is beyond our vision but it is there in the distance.

Pain is mysterious, and having fun is the best way to forget it. If a child has a toothache, and you start playing a game together, he or she immediately forgets the pain. Hospitals must cater to the basic need of patients: We all want to have fun. At St. Luke's we have music and animal therapies, and art classes.

Don't be crazy about amassing material things. Remember: You don't know when your number is up, and you can't take it with you to the next place.

Hospitals must be designed and prepared for major disasters, and they must accept every patient who appears at their doors. We designed St. Luke's so we can operate anywhere: in the basement, in the corridors, in the chapel. Most people thought I was crazy to prepare for a catastrophe, but on March 20, 1995, I was unfortunately proven right when members of the Aum Shinrikyu religious cult launched a terrorist attack in the Tokyo subway. We accepted 740 victims and in two hours figured out that it was sarin gas that had hit them. Sadly we lost one person, but we saved 739 lives.

Science alone can't cure or help people. Science lumps us all together, but illness is individual. Each person is unique, and diseases are connected to their hearts. To know the illness and help people, we need liberal and visual arts, not just medical ones.

Life is filled with incidents. On March 31, 1970, when I was 59 years old, I boarded the Yodogo, a flight from Tokyo to Fukuoka. It was a beautiful sunny morning, and as Mount Fuji came into sight, the plane was hijacked by the Japanese Communist League-Red Army Faction. I spent the next four days handcuffed to my seat in 40-degree heat. As a doctor, I looked at it all as an experiment and was amazed at how the body slowed down in a crisis.

Find a role model and aim to achieve even more than they could ever do. My father went to the United States in 1900 to study at Duke University in North Carolina. He was a pioneer and one of my heroes. Later I found a few more life guides, and when I am stuck, I ask myself how they would deal with the problem.

It's wonderful to live long. Until one is 60 years old, it is easy to work for one's family and to achieve one's goals. But in our later years, we should strive to contribute to society. Since the age of 65, I have worked as a volunteer. I still put in 18 hours seven days a week and love every minute of it.

Constructive Anger

Constructive Anger

Certain situations arise when love, persuasion and other techniques fail to set the thing right or to correct a person or to get a work done. In such circumstances, if it is felt that manifestation of slight anger or terror will help get the work done or correct the situation, then such anger is not harmful.
In fact for a balanced person such anger is only an outward show. Inside he remains cool and composed.
This can also be termed as an `artificial anger' in which other persons will feel as if you are really angry while you are quite controlled from inside.
Does not a drama-artist display anger when the script calls for it? How realistic is his pose, but is there any trace of anger in his heart?
In some situations, you can get the work done from the seriousness of your personality and in that case even artificial anger is not required.
If you are a man of strong character, you say something seriously is enough to get the other person moving. Your personality, your words, your thoughts – all these have great power. It should be noted that anger and assertiveness are two different things. Anger is your weakness and assertiveness is your strength.
Anger is breakdown of control while assertiveness is remaining under full control and dealing with a situation firmly, strongly, seriously.
Anger should pass off the next moment as a wave subsides in the sea. No malice or ill-will should be stored in your heart on account of such anger. It should be momentary outburst of your displeasure.

                                                                         *********
`Be soft as a flower when it comes kindness but tough as thunder when it comes to principle. Be courteous and polite at all times but never to be pushed around,'
`Anybody can become angry~ that is easy; but to be angry with the right person, and to the right degree, and at the right time and for the right purpose, and in the right way~ that is not within everybody's power and is not easy.''—Aristotle

Lower Back Pain...Should You Use Ice or Heat?

Lower Back Pain...Should You Use Ice or Heat?
by: Junji Takano

Hundreds of millions of people worldwide are plagued by lower back pain (lumbago). About 80% of people experience it at some point in their lives, and is very common in the aging population.
There are more than 30 kinds of low back pain. In fact, there's a type of back pain caused by a rupture of blood vessel. This can be very dangerous and may lead to sudden death.
In this article, we'll introduce to you some various measures that you can apply to deal with different types of low back pain.
Lower Back Pain

## What is the Dangerous Type of Low Back Pain?
First, let's talk about the dangerous type of lower back pain, which can be life-threatening. This is rare, but there are cases when it happens.
The dangerous type of low back pain is caused by Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm.
Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm
Aneurysm is a severe enlargement of an artery resulting from a weakening of the artery wall. This commonly develops along the main artery of the body, which is called the aorta.
When this enlarged blood vessel begins to leak or had ruptured, severe pain will occur along the ruptured area.
If the ruptured blood vessel is located in the abdomen, then sudden severe abdominal or low back pain will occur. This is a medical emergency, and if left untreated, it can lead to unconsciousness and even death.

## My Back Hurts! Should I Apply Ice? Or Heat?
In many cases, lower back pain is not that serious but you may always want to alleviate the pain when it occurs.
The first solution that comes to mind when you think of low back pain is to either apply ice or heat. But what is the best solution? Is it heat? Ice? Or both?
Ice or Heat for Lower Back Pain?
- First of all, you should find out what's causing the lower back pain.
Low back pain that occurs suddenly (acute) is caused either by a traumatic injury or improper posture (like when picking up heavy objects).
Symptoms of acute lower back pain are short-lived and will usually disappear in less than 1 month. Symptoms for sub-acute cases can last up to 3 months.
On the other hand, symptoms of chronic lower back pain can persist beyond 3 months. Although this can be caused by a mechanical injury, it is usually caused by a degenerative condition. Sometimes the cause is unknown.

## When There Is an Inflammation, Apply Ice!
The good rule of thumb is that if an area is swollen or if it is an injury that just occurred, use ice. This is the same first aid you use when you have a sprained ankle.
Ice Pack
The idea behind this is that the cold shrinks the blood vessels in the affected area, preventing too much blood from flowing to the injured site. It can also interrupt the nerve impulses, numbing the area.
Remember not to apply ice directly to your skin. Always cover it with a cloth or towel.

## When to Apply Heat for Low Back Pain?
When there is no inflammation or once the inflammation has dissipated after using ice, apply heat treatment for lower back pain. The heat helps the muscles relax. It opens up the blood vessels and encourages blood circulation.
In the end, this promotes better healing. The heat also helps relieve pain by stimulating the nerves.
Heat Pack

## What about Medicated Cold Patch or Heat Patch for Lower Back Pain?
According to a Japanese specialist, in reference to Japan's "2012 Clinical Practice Guidelines for Low Back Pain", you may use either a heat or cold patch for low back pain.
This is how.
Medicated heat patches contain active ingredients such as capsaicin. Capsaicin is a compound that is responsible for the hotness of hot peppers.
On the contrary, cold patches contain active ingredients such as menthol. This gives the cool feeling to relieve pain.
Medicated Cold or Heat Patch
That is, these patches do not literally warm up or cool the body in the first place. They give the sensation of "feeling" cool or warm alongside with other analgesic or anti-inflammatory ingredients to relieve the pain.
You can use either a cold patch or a heat patch depending on what feels more comfortable for you.

## Exercise Technique to Get Rid of Low Back Pain
- Maintain good walking posture
1. Stand straight and avoid leaning forward or leaning back.
2. Do not clench your fists while walking. This can raise your blood pressure.
3. Walk at least more than 15 minutes every day.
- Stay active
1. For acute lower back pain, engaging in physical activity within of course the limits of pain will help speed up the recovery.
2. Light exercises help drive away stress and improve blood circulation.
3. Some people find that biking help them feel comfortable with certain back pain.

However, depending on the type and intensity of back pain, some exercises may not be advisable for you. Remember to always ask your doctor before doing exercise for low back pain.
